Largely following the placid Castlebar River, this pleasant linear route connects the county town of Castlebar in County Mayo, to the pictorial gardens of Turlough Park, home to the Country Life branch of the National Museum of Ireland.
Classed as easy to moderate, this 9.6km trail is set along the serene Castlebar river valley and takes about two hours to walk (one way) or 60 minutes to cycle. Shared by cyclists and walkers alike, the greenway follows surfaced and forest tracks through open countryside, quiet by-roads and native woodland before reaching the lush Turlough Park demesne. A mainly flat route, there is one steep hill and a number of quaint bridges.
In both Castlebar and Turlough you’ll find plenty of places to stop and enjoy a cup of coffee after walking or cycling this charming riverside trail.

- The Castlebar side of this trail connects via bridge to beautiful parkland at Lough Lannagh, a stroll around this idyllic lake is recommended.
Make it a full day excursion by combining a round trip cycle with a visit to the National Museum of Ireland exhibition galleries or the impressively well preserved 11th century round tower overlooking Turlough Village.
