Top Tips to Upscale Your Netflix Security Instantly

As of the third quarter of 2020, Netflix had 195.15 million paid subscribers worldwide and that makes it a lucrative target for cybercriminals.

Despite the ongoing streaming wars, it doesn’t seem Netflix is going to lose its autonomy anytime soon. But then again, a smart business move by a competitor could change the picture in the flick of an eye, however, that seems pretty unlikely.

Netflix has made its foundations so strong, that it became synonymous with streaming. People don’t say let’s watch movies on Netflix, they simply say let’s Netflix. With a subscriber base of more than 195.5 million globally, the streaming giant has become an easy target for cybercriminals to hack accounts and steal credit card details or sell your account on the dark web.

Numerous scams have been surfacing for a long time, especially after the Covid-19 lockdown as more and more people were using the service which resulted in a massive increase in traffic on the platform. In these times it is really important to be aware of all the tactics used by hackers to secure your Netflix account.

Here are some tips to secure your Netflix account!

No password sharing: First things first, your friend Joe might have asked for your password once to watch a particular movie or show and you happily handed the credentials to him. What you didn’t realize that Joe probably shared the credentials with her girlfriend, who further shared them with her friends. Imagine how far your credentials could have traveled without you even knowing. So stop password sharing! Period.

Log out of all devices: To make sure you’re not logged in on other people’s devices, go to the Account section on the top right side of Netflix’s page. Scroll down and you will see the option to “Log out of all devices” click on it and log out of all the devices. This will log out all the free riders enjoying your paid subscription. Now change your password.

Inspect any email or link from Netflix carefully: What these scammers do is that they create email accounts and use language that sounds like it’s totally legit. They may then ask you to update your payment information and that’s how they get the fish in the net! You hand over all your payment information thinking it’s Netflix, but more than often it turns out that you’ve been scammed!

Use a VPN while using Public Wi-Fi: Public Wi-Fi is the easiest way for a hacker to gain access to your device and get into your personal details as well as your Netflix account. Use the best Netflix VPN that will encrypt your network traffic making it impossible for the hacker to penetrate your device.

How does a VPN protect your network? The misconception about VPN is that it secures data on your device but the fact is that it establishes a secure connection between the user and the internet. Once connected to the VPN, the network traffic is routed through an encrypted virtual tunnel.

Additionally, the encryption disguises the user’s IP address while using the internet, making it nearly impossible for attackers to trace their real IP address or location.

Change passwords frequently: This tip is applicable for all your online accounts, especially banking and Netflix. Changing your passwords frequently will keep you safe from falling prey to these criminals.

Also, use strong passwords that have a combination of special characters and numbers. Of course, people like to use passwords that they can easily remember, such as birthdays and anniversary dates or a lover’s name, but it’s a big NO-NO to use such passwords as they can easily be guessed.

Protect your Netflix account with a PIN: It is quite easy to set-up a PIN to protect your Netflix account, just simply follow the steps mentioned below:

  • Sign into Netflix with a web browser
  • Press on your profile photo at the top right, and choose “Account”
  • Go to the Profile & Parental Controls section, now press the arrow beside your profile icon.

You will now see the Profile Lock setting. Here you can set your PIN protection option.

This will be your two-factor authentication which will keep your account extremely safe from anyone trying to access it without your permission.

Check recent activities: Go to Netflix and make sure you’re logged in, now go to the account section under your profile section scroll down, and select Viewing Activity. This will show the list of all the titles that have been viewed from your account. If you notice any titles that you have not watched, it means someone has been using your account. At this point, instantly change your password with a stronger one.

Add a phone number for password recovery: Netflix will give you a text message with a code to retrieve your account if you forget your password. Second, make sure you’ve added a valid and checked phone number to your account.

Follow the below steps:

  1. Go to your Account page from the web browser.
  2. Go to the Membership & Billing section and pick Add your phone number or change your phone number.
  3.  Choose your country.
  4. Please enter your phone number.
  5. Enter your password for the account.

You might be asked to check a code number sent to you via a text message. Testing your phone number enables you to use it for password recovery and account verification if you contact Netflix Customer Support. If you do not want to check your phone number or are not asked to do so, you can check it later by selecting the Send Code from the banner that you can see in your account.
