Kylemore Pottery was established by the Benedictine nuns in 1973. The nuns started off by producing a range with a plain brown glaze of simple functional mugs, bowls and items for use in their own church. Sr Agatha was the founder of the pottery and she was soon joined by other members of the community and a number of local staff. In the 1980s the pottery produced a lovely range of grey speckled ware featuring native flowers such as heather, fuchsia and harebells. In the 1990s Kylemore Pottery was given a new look with a more robust and functional design and the beautiful fuchsia motif that we know and love today.
Today the fuchsia range of pottery is still made at our onsite pottery studio and available exclusively at Kylemore Abbey. Pick up a piece of Kylemore Pottery when you visit as a lasting memento of your visit to Kylemore Abbey. The pottery produced is crafted using time honoured, traditional techniques and can be purchased in the onsite craft and design shop in Kylemore, County Galway.
